How do I choose the right sun protection factor for me?

The right sun protection factor depends on your skin type as well as how long you intend to stay in the sun. But other factors, such as time of day, location and type of activity also play a crucial role.  However, if you have light or sensitive skin we always recommend to use a higher factor. This also applies if you plan on spending an entire day in the sun. One common misconception is that only people with light skin need strong sun protection. But, in fact, good protection is just as important for people with darker skin, e.g., people that might already have a deep tan.  Even if you do not get any visible burns, your skin can be damaged by deep-penetrating UVA radiation which can cause skin damage and skin cancer in the long run. An additional guideline is that children under the age of 16 should always use an 30 SPF or higher.

How to use EVY

Shake the bottle and hold it upside down to avoid excess gas from leaking out. Then carefully squeeze out the desired amount of mousse. Using a small amount of mousse several times makes application easier. Rub the mousse between your palms until a liquid-like cream begins to form and rub it in methodically on each part of your body. A palm-size portion of mousse per adult arm is usually enough. It should dry in 5-10 minutes and should not feel sticky. If it dries faster than that, you might not have used enough. But it might also dry faster because your skin is unusually dry. If, on the other hand, your skin still feels sticky, you can rinse off the excess with water without washing off the screen. Keep in mind that in humid and hot climates, the mousse may take longer to dry. When preparing for a long day at the beach, our best recommendation is to apply sunscreen generously in the morning. Let it dry properly before you go swimming or get dressed. Most of our sunscreen mousses are extra waterproof and provide very long-lasting protection. However, it is important to apply a correct amount achieve the factor level on the label.

Why can't I get all of the mousse out of the bottle?

Aerosols use gas to pump the product out in mousse form. If serum-like liquid seeps out, the bottle has run out of gas. This can occur when the bottle has not been held upside down properly during use. However, the actual product is still perfectly all right. If the bottle stops working completely while there is a lot of mousse left, the bottle valve may be faulty.  In that case, contact us via our info-mail page. In case of complaints, we need to know the batch number on the bottom of the bottle, and in some cases we also need to receive the defective bottle, so do not throw it away.

How does EVY differ from other skincare and sunscreen products?

EVY is based on unique, Swedish skincare technology – meaning that the basic formula is distributed throughout the top skin layer, instead of just remaining on the surface. This means that EVY penetrates deeper into the skin layer than many other products on the market. It also provides extra long-lasting protection as the formula stays on the skin without being affected by water or sweating, which otherwise can cause the product to be rinsed or rubbed off. By strengthening the skin’s barrier protection, EVY also helps the skin to perform its natural functions – such as protecting and remoisturizing. This results in a protective barrier that, like a layer of Gore-Tex, provides increased resistance by forming a membrane in the entire top layer of skin which mimics the skin’s own defence system, while allowing the skin to breathe and sweat freely. EVY also protects against heat, wind, and substances that can have an irritant effect on the skin. All products based on EVY’s technology share in common the same simple application process and consist of a quickly absorbed solution – a great advantage when you want to make sure you apply the recommended amount.

How long does the protection last and what determines frequency of application?

A sunscreen’s effectiveness is determined by things like how much you sweat, whether you go swimming and the UV index. We conduct different efficiency tests for different formulas. Water tests in a laboratory environment show that our SPF 50 maintains an SPF of 35 after 8 hours. This is based on exposure to water for 20 minutes followed by a 15 minute drying time, for a total of 480 minutes. These results are extremely high. Our waterproof facial products maintain their SPF factor for more than 8 hours when not exposed to water. However, excessive long-term exposure to the sun always entails risks, as no products provide total sun protection. As many people do not apply enough, frequent application is recommended, although that will not help if you have already burned yourself. In that case, you should avoid the sun.

Is there any difference between kid and adult sunscreen protection?

Regular SPF 30 and 50 contain antioxidant supplements that work well against premature aging. Apart from that, it’s the same formula. The main reason why our children’s products have an adapted formula is to help the market and consumers to more easily identify a product that is suitable for and checked according to children’s needs. The feel of the mousse and the user-friendly formula are the same for all EVY products and can be used from 6 months up. However, we recommend SPF 30 or higher for children under 16 years.

Can I use EVY together with other skincare products and in what order should they be applied?

EVY can be combined with other products. For example, Daily UV Face Mousse is the perfect choice on top of a moisturizing serum, followed by foundation or makeup. Our face products are intended to be used like day creams and you really do not need any other products.  EVY also protects the skin from make-up ingredients that can have an irritant effect on your skin. Daily UV and Defense Face Mousse are like a primer and help to keep the makeup in place and are usually suitable even around the eyes. Heavier products can be layered on EVY if desired.

Can I use EVY around my eyes?

Unfortunately, all sunscreens have a tendency to sting if they get into your eyes. You can try applying 1-2 cm away from your eyes as the product tends to spread out a bit after application. If your eyes become irritated, avoid applying in that area. How sensitive people’s eyes are varies. It is a good idea to wipe off any excess sunscreen with a towel after it has been absorbed, especially around the eyes and the forehead if you feel sweaty. This prevents excess sunscreen from dripping into your eyes.

How do I wash my skin in the evening after using sunscreen?

Sunscreens often feel sticky, but most cleansing methods remove oil, so just follow your usual facial cleansing and rinse routine. You can use regular soap on your body, but usually it’s not necessary. EVY Sunscreen Mousse doesn’t clog the pores.

Is EVY ok to use when it's very cold outside?

Thanks to our technology and its barrier strengthening quality all EVY products are great to use in cold weather. They prevent the skin from dehydration which is very common and we strongly recommend our Daily Repair during winter in combination with our face sun screens.

As the products are water based, apply approx. 10-30 min before going outside so you are sure that all the product is absorbed and dry.  You can take the product with you outside, it tolerates down to -19 degrees Celsius forfew days. If a bottle freezes, shake well when defrosted.

Does EVY stain clothes?

All sunscreens can potentially stain clothes, in particular white clothes. Our own tests have shown that the product can leave a faint yellow stain on white clothes – which usually can be washed off. Therefore, it is important to let the product fully penetrate into your skin. This reduces the risk of staining clothes. However, it is not possible to check for reactions to unknown chemicals in swimming pools etc. Some of our newest and most up-to-date products contain Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, which prevents clothes from staining.

As does our new 2020 formula, check the INCI on the bottle for the following products: Sunscreen Mousse SPF 50 (blue bottle), Daily Defense SPF 50 (beige bottle), and Sunscreen Mousse SPF 30 (blue bottle). However, although we have improved our formula to reduce staining as much as possible, we cannot guarantee that your clothes won’t stain.

Make sure you allow your skin to fully absorb the product for about 10 minutes before getting dressed.

If you notice any yellow staining on your clothes, try to remove them with washing up liquid or bicarbonate.

Yellow stain issues vary greatly due to individual levels of salt, sweat, exposure to chlorine, etc. In fact, we receive many calls from customers telling us that one reason they buy EVY is because it doesn’t stain their swimwear and clothes.

Will the sunscreen lose its effect if combined with other products?

Very few products affect chemical sun filters, with regards to SPF. However, we do recommend that you apply EVY sunscreen to clean skin. Let other lotions be fully absorbed first, and avoid using sticky or silicone-based products in your foundation, as they can prevent the sunscreen from being absorbed. If you want to complement your daily routine with another lotion, it is important to let the sunscreen dry fully before applying. The sunscreen mousse moisturises and takes care of your skin.

How do I apply Daily Tan Activator together with sunscreen?

Daily Tan Activator is an intensive skincare and moisturising mousse that stimulates the skin’s melanin production and strengthens the skin’s barrier. It can be applied daily, mornings and evenings, to allow your skin to develop a gradual, even and natural looking tan without exposing it to the sun. Tan Activator it is also perfect for holidays in the sun or preserving your tan. Since it does not contain any sunscreen, it suitable for the shade of parasols or in the evening instead of an After Sun product.

What is the difference between EVY Daily UV Face Mousse and EVY SPF 30?

Daily UV Face Mousse is waterproof and contains several active ingredients and can be used to protect against sun damage and external pollution on a daily basis. It is enriched with active ingredients, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and E as well as Nymphaea Alba Extract and Sodium Palmitoyl Proline to even out pigmentations. EVY SPF 30 can be used both on your face and body and consists of an extra-waterproof formula, making it an excellent choice for sunny holidays or physical activity when you might sweat more than usual.

Do EVY products provide hair and scalp protection as well?

EVY’s UV/Heat Hair Mousse, protects your hair on several different levels. The product is great for styling and, in addition to long-term UV protection, it also provides heat protection up to 210 ° C for styling with heating tools. Thanks to special UV filters, the hair is protected against drying out and sun-bleaching. The product also provides protection against HEV/blue light. The mousse contains a light formula which softens and straightens the hair without weighing it down, making it elastic and shiny, and strengthens it as well as preventing split ends. If you have thin hair or a completely bare scalp, we recommend our skin products. The hair product is not suitable for bare scalps/skin.

There is no open jar sign, how long does an EVY product last?

Thanks to the aerosol container, you never need to open an EVY bottle. The bottle only releases the required amount of product and maintains the same integrity as an airtight can. Since it never comes into contact with oxygen, it never turns rancid, which is why EVY can be completely free of preservatives and alcohol. This means that you will be able to use up the entire contents of the product even if you bought it a while ago. The best/before date can be found on the underside of the product but mainly serves as a guideline since, in our experience, the product actually lasts much longer than that.

What should I think about when travelling with EVY products?

We recommend wrapping the bottle in a plastic bag and then placing it among your clothes to protect against and absorb bumps. Aerosol bottles are more sensitive to careless handling than plastic bottles, and can leak foam if damaged. Do not expose the bottle to direct sunlight or heat above 50 degrees. Otherwise, EVY is an excellent and flexible travel companion and is happy to travel with you to all corners of the earth.

About SPF

What does SPF really mean?

The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) number on the package indicates the level of UVB radiation that penetrates through to the skin, when an appropriate amount is applied. For example, SPF 10 allows 1/10 of UVB radiation to pass through and hence provides 90 percent protection while SPF 50 allows 1/50, which corresponds to 98 percent protection.

It is a common misconception that, e.g., SPF 30 provides twice as effective protection against the sun as SPF 15. SPF 15 provides 93 percent protection while SPF 30 provides 97 percent protection. It is true that SPF 15 allows about 7% UVB radiation to penetrate and SPF 30 allows about 3%, but you also need to look at the bigger picture. The notion that you can stay in the sun 15 or 30 times longer is also misleading. Sometimes, SPF is described in terms of time. If you tend to burn your skin within 10 minutes without sunscreen, SPF 30 x 10 minutes will provide protection for about 5 hours. This requires that you apply the right amount of sunscreen and according to instructions. All sunscreen products let some UV radiation through, so it is still possible that you could get burnt in 5 hours, despite using the highest SPF. Also, keep in mind that the UV index changes during the day!

I get sunburn even when I use sunscreen, what am I doing wrong?

The fact is, most of us do not use enough sunscreen, or do not apply it often enough. According to dermatologists, on average we use about 1/3 of what they recommend. If you use half the recommended amount of SPF 50 you won’t get SPF 25. This is because SPF 50 let’s through 1/50 of the UVB rays, which equals 98% protection. Half of 98% protection is 49% which in SPF means approximately ½ = SPF 2. Another common mistake is to apply sunscreen after already having spent time in the sun. We often misjudge how long we are able to stay in the sun without sunscreen. The sun gets stronger the closer you get to the equator, so even if it is chilly or cloudy, sunscreen is still recommended.

How efficient a sunscreen is depends on what you do, how you tend to sweat, whether you go swimming, etc. But in tests and in real life, our SPF 50 has proven to last more than 8 hours. In lab tests, our SPF 50 has an SPF 35 after 8 hours of water-testing (20 minutes underwater and 15 minutes drying time for a total of 480 minutes). This is extremely high for such a long period. But since it is impossible to know whether every single customer uses the recommended amount, or has particularly sensitive skin, etc, we try to avoid using exact numbers. Remember, if you spend a lot of time outdoors, you can still get burned – there are no sunscreens that provide full protection against the sun. For example, a person with very light or sensitive skin who uses SPF 50 should still avoid spending too much time in the sun, particularly strong sunlight. For example: If you tend to get sunburned within 5 minutes without sunscreen, you should be able to stay in the sun 50 times longer, or approximately 250 minutes. (This is a general rule of thumb and not always completely true). You might still get sunburned after about 4 hours if you have sensitive skin, so you can’t always completely depend on your sunscreen providing protection for longer than that since SPF 50 lets through about 2 % of radiation, or, put another way, 98 % protection. SPF 30 protects against almost 97% of UVB radiation, so the difference is marginal. If you have been exposed to more UV radiation than your skin is suited for, using more sunscreen won’t help.

What is the difference between UVA and UVB?

UVB are high-intensity rays that can burn the skin, and the number on the packaging indicates the level of protection against UVB. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and can cause long-term skin damage. People with sensitive skin, children and people who wish to avoid premature aging, should make sure that they buy products with high UVA protection. Previously, sunscreen products were not required to protect against UVA, but some restrictions have been introduced around the world since then. Both forms of radiation contribute to damaging skin and causing skin cancer. In the EU, products must contain at least 33 percent of the specified SPF/UVB factor, according to the standard Colipa test. Look for the UVA ring on your sunscreen products.

What’s EVYs UVA protection?

We use  Boost Star Rating Test to clarify the EU’s mandatory UVA rating. The EU’s standardised test tells you that a sunscreen has at least 1/3 UVA protection in relation to the SPF-value. In simple terms, it’s a pass/fail testing method. For instance, if you have a sunscreen with SPF 10 the UVA protection is 1/3 = 30% UVA protection.

The Boots Star Rating Test measures the UVA slightly differently but it tells you more clearly how high the UVA protection actually is. Boots measures the absorption rate of the UVA radiation in comparison to the UVB. The results are then presented with stars ranging from 0-5. All EVY sunscreens have been tested by Boots and have the highest possible UVA-protection, which is why we have 5 stars on all our sunscreens! The 5 stars tell you that the UVA protection is over 90% in relation to the UVB.

Furthermore, we’ve tested our newest sunscreen, Daily Defense Face Mousse SPF 50, with the PA+ system which measures the PPD and rates it in a relevant scale. We also achieved the highest possible UVA-protection for this, which is given as PA++++. The reason for testing Daily Defense through a PA test is that EVY is available in China and the PA tests are very popular there. However, we prefer the Boots Star Rating as it gives the consumer a clearer view of how high the UVA protection is. What are EVYs UVA-PF and PPD-values?

Following the recommendations provided by the EU, regarding the cautions and the known ambiguity in understanding UVA- tests, EVY has decided to only publish the standard test values from each testing method. The reason is to not confuse the consumer with different numbers from different test as the results cannot be compared with each other.

Instead, we are going to explain how they are performed so you can choose the right sunscreen for you.

ISO 24442: The PPD measures Pigment Persistent Darkening. It measures how quickly the skin develops pigmentation. But how do you do that, you may wonder? Well, the PPD-test is an in vivo test, meaning it is performed on actual people. In other words: they apply sunscreen to 10 different people’s backs and then expose their skin to UVA-radiation. From the results a mean value is calculated and presented through the PA+-system:

PA+: mean value between 2 and less than 4

PA++ : mean value between 4 and less than 8

PA+++: mean value between 8 and less than 16

PA++++: mean value of 16 or more

*A mean value over 17 is not approved by the EU as the test result cannot definitely be reproduced. The PA test is a Japanese test method which is not often used on European products.  A PPD value above 17 is not considered to be relevant according to this test.  If compared to a SPF value of 100, it sounds so much more than SPF 50 but in reality the difference is only 1%, from a very high protection level of 98% to 99%

The PPD-test is a bit problematic as how fast one’s skin develops pigmentation is unique to the individual. We may have different colour skin or skin types that react to the sun differently. It’s difficult to represent the whole population through 10 people only. Another problem is that the PPD value can also be presented as UVA-PF and therefore the consumer may confuse it with the ISO 24443 test. Most importantly the test does not measure the UVA effect on DNA or proteins as in vitro tests do.

ISO-24443: The European standardised test measures the UVA-PF in vitro which means that it’s not tested on humans but rather in a laboratory. The sunscreen is applied to a plate which imitates the skin’s roughness. The plate is then exposed to UVA radiation and the UVA ratio in comparison to the UVB is measured. The result is presented as UVA-PF and in the EU it’s a pass/fail result which tells you that the sunscreen has at least 1/3 UVA protection in relation to the SPF value. In the USA this measures the Critical Wavelength which has to be at least 370 nm and, if it passes, the sunscreen is labelled Broad Spectrum.

So, comparing these two tests is impossible as one measures protection on actual people while the other measures it in a laboratory. As a lot of consumers don’t understand this, it’s not recommended to state the value without an evaluation scale as it may confuse people even more. At EVY, we follow the EU’s regulations and recommendations strictly in order to develop the best skincare products for your skin.

What do I do if I don't want to get tanned?

We are constantly surrounded by UVA radiation, regardless of weather, which stresses cells and makes melanin darker. But it doesn’t change the body’s level of melanin and prevents additional tanning. You need UVB radiation, i.e. sunshine, to increase the body’s production of melanin, which is what gives you a genuine tan. So the best way to avoid getting an even darker tan is to use a sunscreen with a high SPF.

If you want to even out pigmentation or avoid premature ageing, you should use a good UVA sunscreen, regardless of whether the sun is shining or not. UVA rays make up 95% of visible light and are able to pass through glass. Our products provide extra strong protection against UVA radiation, according to Boots Star Rating Test. The test measures the ratio between UVA protection and the SPF protection indicated on the label and we have managed to achieve a 5-star rating, or the highest possible protection against UVA radiation. This means that EVY is classified as a broad spectrum sunscreen. The PA system is often used in Asia. It measures persistant pigment darkening (ppd), i.e. how quickly you develop a tan. Our newest addition, Daily Defense Face Mousse, was tested through PA+ and got 4+ or maximum results here too, with a ppd of about 20. In addition to choosing a long-lasting and stable sunscreen, you can combine it with substances like vitamin C and other pigment-inhibiting substances. Apply them first, followed by sunscreen.

What is hev/blue light and how do I protect myself?

HEV light (High-Energy Visible Light) also called blue light, is mainly produced by the sun, just like UVA and UVB. In fact, HEV penetrates even deeper into the skin than UV radiation and causes wrinkles, coarse skin and pigmentation. We are exposed to this radiation even in cloudy weather. Mobile phones, computers and tablet also give off HEV/bluelight. To protect your skin from bluelight, you should choose a product that is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants prevent free radicals from creating a harmful chain reaction deep down. Tip: Turn on Night Shift on your mobile phone to avoid or reduce your exposure to HEV/bluelight. This feature is available on most newer mobile phones.  

What is infrared radiation?

Infrared radiation is radiation from the sun that we experience as heat and should not be confused with UVB radiation. Some products provide some protection against infrared radiation, but not as much as the indicated levels of SPF/UVB protection. Reducing free radicals caused by infrared is very difficult. In comparison, SPF 50 blocks as much as 98 percent of UVB radiation, when applied appropriately. There are no established, official requirements with regards to the evidence of effectiveness of IR protection in sunscreen products. This is why EVY sunscreen products do not indicate any infrared protection.

What sun filters are used in EVY products?

To provide the highest possible UVA and UVB protection, EVY products contain several different chemical sun filters, since different kinds of filters work in different ways. This allows us to reduce the amount of sun filters. The approved amount of sun filters is 25%. By using a small amount of each substance, the risks associated with a substance that usually has a maximum limit of about 10 percent of the concentration are minimized. This makes the products mild and hypoallergenic and can be recommended from 6 months of age. It is worth remembering that our chemical filters, and chemical filters in general, are organic/natural and consist of the elements, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen. They have been produced specifically to provide protection against UV radiation, unlike actual physical filters. The terms physical and chemical filters are often generalised, but in actual fact the issue is quite complex. Therefore, you should see each product in its own, unique light, and it is worth remembering that EVY is very different to regular sunscreen products, due to EVY’s patented basic formula. What is the difference between physical and chemical filters?

Physical filters like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are finely ground, mineral-based particles with a distinguishable white membrane. However, the membrane can be reduced by applying it in nanoform. Even though they are minerals, they are not biodegradable. The advantage of physical filters is the low risk of allergies. Some people may react to chemical sun filters, as many brands use high concentrations of the UV filters.

The problem with physical nanoform filters is that they only provide a mild level of UVA protection. Children and people with sensitive skin need especially strong UVA protection. Hence, most manufacturers use chemical filters as they provide stronger UVA protection. Chemical filters do not have a white membrane or particularly sticky surface, and many people feel that they are easier to apply. However, we shouldn’t generalise too much about chemical sunscreens – there are about 30 different kinds and they all have unique properties.

Why does EVY contain octocrylene?

Octocrylene is a UV booster which allows us to reduce the sunsfilters while simultaneously stabilizing other filter ingredients, and therefore is a very important and beneficial component. It has been well-tested and studied, which is not always the case when it comes to sun filters. New UV filters on the market, haven’t always had time to be studied, which might make them riskier. In other words, products that do not contain Octocrylene may contain higher levels of total sun filters, which increase the risk of skin rash. Additionally, products with higher levels of sun filters often feel sticky, which make them less pleasant to use. Many brands add substances to try to reduce the sticky feeling. This often leads to reduced water tension, which is an undesirable side-effect. EVY products contain a small amount, 4-5% of octocrylene, while the permitted amount is 10%  of the total product, according to EU rules.

All EVY Technology sunscreen products, including their raw materials, are carefully tested and evaluated for toxicology, and the safety margin is estimated in relation to potential exposure. Additionally, all EVY Technology sunscreen products have all been allergy-tested based on a worst-case scenario; i.e. the products containing the highest concentration of potentially allergenic substances have been dermatologically tested to evaluate the possible risk of skin irritation. The tests did not show any reactions, which is why all EVY Technology’s sunscreen products have been labelled as “Dermatologically tested” and “designed for sensitive skin”.

Will I tan if I'm using high SPF?

You certainly can, and if you have light or sensitive skin, a sunscreen with a high SPF is key to achieving an even and long-lasting tan. At the first sign of any damage, your skin immediately begins to regenerate and remove the damaged skin. After only a few days, the damaged skin begins to flake off and new, pink skin emerges. EVY protects the skin against damage and allows the melanin to develop a beautiful, brown, long-lasting tan. It takes about 48 hours for pigments resulting from the sun to reach the surface. In fact, you shouldn’t get red at all, as that is a sign that you’ve burnt your skin. When you get a tan quickly, in just a couple of days, you activate the melanin in the epidermis. But that kind of tan disappears quickly. In other words, it’s not worth damaging your skin just to get a quick tan. Instead, start off with a high SPF factor and slowly lower it as your tan deepens.

Should I use sunscreen if I have dark or tanned skin?

Although you might already be tanned, you still need sunscreen against UVA radiation, which can damage tanned skin. Even if you rarely or never get sunburnt, you still risk getting skin cancer in the future as a result of invisible UVA radiation. In regions around the world that do not get much sun, approximately a third of the population are diagnosed with skin cancer at some point. In sunny regions, e.g. Asia and South America, the figure is 1 in 5, despite the fact that people are well aware of the damaged the sun can cause and avoid the sun to a greater extent than us Scandinavians.

Do sunscreen cosmetics really work?

We believe that cosmetics containing SPF are misleading. They do not inform the customer of how much is needed for full SPF protection. With regards to sunscreens, the general recommendation for facial use is 5ml. That is quite a lot even if you only use sunscreen and even more if you try to reach the same level with foundation or powders! It is generally recommended that sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours to maintain full protection against the sun. Additionally, products that are not marketed as sunscreens are not required to provide information on UVA filters in their product or quantity statements.

Can sunscreen cause vitamin D deficiency?

Researchers from sunny Australia have studied our capacity to produce vitamin D, with and without sunscreen protection. The study concluded that there was no significant difference. Instead, diet was found to be more significant than minimal exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D deficiency is rare in countries like Greenland and North Japan, countries that traditionally include a lot of fish in their diet. Fish liver oil and egg yolk are also excellent sources of vitamin D.

PREGNANCY, ALLERGIES AND SENSITIVE SKIN

Can I use EVY products if I'm pregnant?

Definitely! Our products are very mild, and contain no preservatives or perfumes, which also makes them suitable for children from 6 months and up. During pregnancy, the level of female hormones in the body rises, which also stimulates the synthesis of melanin and can quickly lead to changes in pigmentation, also known as melasma. This can cause brown or greyish spots commonly found on the forehead, cheeks and around the mouth. Exposure to the sun significantly increases the risk of melasma. In fact, the amount of sun that the skin is exposed to in one sunny day can lead to overproduction of melanin, which in itself can cause pigment changes. Usually, the spots disappear within six months of childbirth, but in some cases they might fade away, but do not completely disappear. To prevent and avoid melasma, you should use sunscreen with a high factor whenever you spend time in the sun.  Skincare products (including some sunscreen products) that contain vitamins increase skin sensitivity, since vitamin A has an exfoliating effect. This means that we burn easier, and the risk of pigmentation and other kinds of skin damage is increased, which is what makes a high SPF necessary. In other words, it is important to sunbathe with moderation, and to take breaks when appropriate.

* The EWG.org (Environmentally Working Group), an American consumer information association, warns that many kinds of sun spray products contain nano or microparticles which could be inhaled by the consumer. If you are pregnant, you should consider this or, of course, even if you’re not pregnant.

Does EVY sunscreen contain allergens or nanoparticles?

No, EVY products do not contain any known or controversial substances.

How can EVY be gentle to sensitive skin, yet so reliable ?

Thanks to our unique technology, we can use longer lasting and less of active ingredients. Our formula contains about 70 percent water and effectively interacts with the skin, while only containing low levels of other substances. When it comes to allergic reactions, sun filters are usually the culprit. Regulations in different parts of the world are very different, and some contain up to 50% of sun filters. EVY uses low levels of UV filters while at the same time being efficient. You can tell by its fragrance, as it’s milder than many other sunscreen products. In many cases, the unpleasant smell of sun filters is hidden behind perfumes, which can also cause allergies. Some people are sensitive to both sun filters and perfume, but it might be difficult to establish the exact cause since they all carry a low-risk of causing an allergic reaction.  All EVYs products have been dermatologically tested, which means that no subjects experienced any reactions in independent lab tests. EVY does not contain perfumes or preservatives.

Why should I use perfume-free and preservative-free skin products?

Perfumes may smell nice but they should be avoided in skincare products. A surprising number of skincare products contain perfume, even though they are well-known to irritate the skin or make it more sensitive. This applies both to sensitive skin as well as normal skin types, and much like damage caused by the sun, may be invisible at first and appear at a later stage. Some people develop allergies to certain perfumes after having used them for many years due to increased sensitivity. A number of brands use perfumes to hide less pleasant smells. Fats grow rancid after a while and natural products begin to smell after only a short period of time – especially if kept in containers that are frequently opened. The same applies to products kept in containers that are not lightproof or are stored in warm areas. Some ingredients have natural fragrances, such as aloe vera, herbs and fruit extracts. They have a mild fragrance and should not be confused with perfumes.

Does EVY contain any preservatives or perfumes?

Preservatives are often added to increase product durability, but they can also irritate and weaken the skin barrier. On the other hand, preservative-free products have a shorter shelf-life, and there is also the risk of rubbing contaminated products into your skin, which could damage it. This means that preservatives are often necessary, especially in water-based products. This is one of the many reasons why EVY comes in aerosol bottles. You never need to open the bottle, and you always get a fresh spray of clean mousse that has never come into contact with oxygen before. When you expose your skin to dehydrating elements such as the sun, salt and chlorine, or even skin burns, it is even more important that you use mild products, so as not to further irritate the skin. This is why all EVY products are free of perfumes, preservatives and dehydrating alcohol.

Is EVY good for sensitive acne/rosacea or eczema?

EVY is highly suitable for skin types that are sensitive, often feel dry or suffer from acne. We recommend our medically classified Daily Repair Mousse for that. Dry and thin skin has a weaker skin barrier, and needs to be strengthened. The mousse acts as a barrier between the skin and foreign substances, like a membrane made of Gore-Tex, which strengthens the skin’s own defence mechanism, while still letting it breathe freely. This barrier prevents irritation, eczemas and can prevent allergies. Sunscreens often clog up the pores and feel sticky, and many people experience rashes or blemishes. However, EVY sunscreen is light as a feather, does not clog up the pores and rehydrates the skin, without leaving a sticky feeling. Many consumers who suffer from acne avoid greasy, fatty products, since they cause clogged pores. This, in turn, can slow down the healing process and lead to even more acne. But using the right kind of fatty acids can help balance sensitive skin. Often, people lack products with the right kind of strengthening fats in their daily skincare routine. EVY products can be used straight after shaving and before applying makeup, which can also cause irritated skin and acne. We have had many very satisfied consumers who suffer from eczema or rosacea, so if you haven’t found any products that are suitable for your skin type, we definitely recommend that you try EVY.

ETHICS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Are EVY products eco-labelled?

Applying for an eco-label for a sunscreen product is a complicated process. For example, some substances, particularly beauty ingredients, are considered to be unnecessary and therefore are not approved. There are a number of criteria that need to be met, and the process is expensive, as the company receives royalties from the brand. Some organisations are not as professionally managed as the authorities and may have their own agenda. A product that has not been eco-labelled may, in some cases, be just as good or better than a labelled product. Certification companies are not official authorities, but instead make money by certifying companies. Currently, we are not certified, but we are looking into it on a continuous basis and we do aim to certify some of our products in the future.

As a consumer, what should I think about with regards to ingredients?

We have been in the business of producing sun protection since 1999 and have experienced many trends and new developments. Newly-introduced sun filters often appear to be better at first glance, but usually they have not been tested in studies and have little usage history. 10-15 years ago, parabens were all the rage – only to later be classified as endocrine disruptors. Physical filters such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide were lauded until studies revealed that basically all modern sunscreens that contain these substances also contain nanoparticles.

There are many factors to consider when judging an ingredient, but it is very important to assess amounts and usage. We often compare this to the examples of salt and water – both can be either vital or life-threatening, depending on how they are used. Generally speaking, various organizations/media focus on certain substances, but if they were to look further, they might pay the same attention to other ingredients that do not get reviewed. When criticising an ingredient, it is important to consider the source. Some certificates are marketed by telling consumers that the authorities are not doing their job and checking products well enough. Authorities do not serve profit-based agendas, they look at all the factors – including alternatives, if a substance is banned. An example is the hysterical discussion on parabenes, which resulted in companies using preservatives that had not undergone the same amount of tests. Thus, they may not have been better preservatives than the well tested parabenes. Additionally, the rules for sunscreen products and the approved amount of sun filters differ around the world. The USA, for example, lags behind due to domestic regulations, which often confuses consumers browsing the Internet for information.

Are your products organic/natural?

A lot of consumers ask if EVY is classified as an eco-friendly sunscreen product, but the fact is that no approved sun filters can be classified as ecological products, since they are not cultivated. Physical mineral filters, like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, are inorganic minerals in chemical terms, as they do not grow or decay. Just like water, which cannot be classified as an ecological substance since it doesn’t grow.

All filters are based on natural substances that can either be found in nature or are composed of other substances, to serve an intended purpose. The lab environment allows us to remove one component that causes an allergy without removing the effective substance, or perhaps even increase an effect – but the product then becomes defined as a chemical product, despite it being based on natural substances. Physical filters do not meet the standards we strive for. We produce highly effective products that allow consumers with no pigment to spend time in the sun while simultaneously being hypoallergenic, comfortable and above all won’t run off. If I am concerned about the environment and coral reefs, is EVY sunscreen a good choice for me?

With EVY, you do not need to apply mousse as often and it doesn’t wash off, which is good from an environmental perspective. If you go swimming or snorkelling among coral reefs while wearing EVY, you won’t leave any significant impact on the environment, but different countries have different opinions on some of the ingredients.

EVY does not contain any of the following controversial ingredients. PABA, Oxybenzone, Butylparaben, Octinoxate, 4-methylbenzylidine or Camphor. The most commonly used physical sun filters, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, are of natural decent and usually developed into nano form. However, they are not biodegradable.

The culprit of coral reef decline is global warming and pollution. We also need to remember that the most eco-friendly way of treating coral reefs is to not visit them by motorboat and trample about among them.

Are your sunscreens biodegradable/safe for coral reefs?

Most chemical sun filters, including ours, have organic origins: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen; that is, compounds of various elements that are specifically produced for a purpose, which is why they are called chemicals. Currently, there are about 26 approved chemical filters, which makes it more difficult to generalise, as is the case with physical filters. All approved filters are assessed to be safe for humans up to a certain percent of the formula.

In general, all sun filters are somewhat resistant to biodegradation, and frankly speaking, our knowledge of their environmental impact is limited. Sun filters with nano particles, in particular, are controversial, from an environmental perspective. This makes it especially important to use sunscreens that do not wash off in water. However, often it is these same products that contribute to the product’s water resistance, which is an important factor. Chemical filters are made from organic elements while mineral filters are classified as inorganic, as they are not biodegradable. This means that the term biodegradable becomes a matter of interpretation.

All EVY sunscreens have been tested for safety, all ingredients have been tested for toxins, and the safety margins are estimated based on common exposure scenarios. Trace levels in Evy Technology sunscreen comply with, and are lower than, the maximum trace levels allowed in finished products, according to the Cosmetic Products Regulation (EC) 1223/2009.

What makes EVY unique is that the combination of UV filters in EVY sunscreens provide broad protection against UVA/UVB radiation, and are highly stable when combined. Our technology allows us to use less sun filters, which makes our products extra mild, including for the environment (recommended from 6 months).

 

Highly water-resistant products remain on your skin better after a day at the beach. In other words, when using highly water-resistant products, you leave very little residual product in the sea-water. This is where EVY’s extra water-resistance products shine, since they retain most of their SPF for 8 hours or more. What are the environmental benefits of EVY aerosol bottles?

You never need to open the bacteria-proof and hygienic aerosol bottle, which means that the product never goes bad or degrades, unlike most other products. Additionally, EVY expands when it comes into contact with the air, which produces a mousse that feels very economical. Aerosol packaging allows EVY products to be completely free of preservatives and alcohol. This prevents wastage and makes sure you can use every last drop of the product. The propellant gas is eco-friendly and made from renewable raw material. The propellant has been purified and is suitable for cosmetic products.

Are EVY bottles recyclable?

EVY products are made in Sweden and the bottle is made of recycled aluminium that can be re-used when disposed of in metal-recycling receptacles, while the dispenser and lid is separated as a plastic waste product. Remember, aluminium can be recycled indefinitely so please recycle your finished bottle correctly.

Have the products been tested on animals and are they suitable for vegans?

We are currently phasing out all animal products, and starting in 2020, only our Daily UV Face Mousse will contain collagen and silk extract.  None of our products in the EU have been tested on animals and we have practised zero tolerance since 2013. However, many countries ended animal tests many years ago, since we now have alternative methods. Nevertheless, we cannot guarantee that not a single ingredient has been tested on animals previously by a third party, as many have been preserved for a long time. That would be dishonest. But we can guarantee that the final product has not been tested on animals. Our products have been tested on humans for 20 years now. Animal skin is different from human skin, and animal tests are not only unnecessary, they are also outdated and unethical.

What are the rules and guidelines for physical mineral filters and nanoparticles?

There are only two physical mineral filters, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. In 2009, however, nanoparticles of zinc oxide were banned in the EU. There were also discussions about banning nanoforms of titanium dioxide, in other words basically all forms of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in sunscreens, until sufficient studies had been carried out. Sunscreens that contain nanoparticles were approved in 2016, and are now considered safe. However, guidelines do warn about sprays that contain titaniumdixoid nanoparticles due to the risk of inhalation. Nanoparticles are added to reduce white, sticky film on the skin – which physical filters tend to produce. Generally speaking, using an appropriate amount of sunscreen takes a bit of effort, and it becomes even more cumbersome if the lotion is sticky and easily peels off.

What should I think about when travelling with EVY products?

100 ml or smaller bottles are normally ok in your handluggage but bigger need to be checked in.

We recommend wrapping the bottle in a plastic bag and then placing it among your clothes to protect against and absorb bumps. Aerosol bottles are more sensitive to careless handling than plastic bottles, and can leak foam if damaged. Do not expose the bottle to direct sunlight or heat above 50 degrees. Otherwise, EVY is an excellent and flexible travel companion and is happy to travel with you to all corners of the earth.
